Hi everyone! Without our vendor partners, we wouldn’t have all these wonderful furniture finds for you. In honor of them, we are going to start featuring them in our blog stories. The first one is one of our 3 Ashley reps, Mark Szydlowski.
“Mark Szydlowski CHR Ashley Stationary Upholstery division, and have worked with the ASHLEY companies for over 12 years.
Past history-I was an actual furniture repair technician, upholsterer and woodworker for over 10 years. The best part about my current position with Ashley is I get to interact with salespersons and customer service personnel. I always enjoy hearing about their families, and current happenings in their lives. I also get to travel and meet so many interesting people and really help provide a service in the home furnishings industry. ”
The last Vegas report is all about the bedroom!
And my personal favorite, since I have 2 little girls, the Lightheaded beds! You can personalize it with your favorite Disney character or scene. Even can have one custom made with their picture on it! Kids can read with the ambient light and it’s even set on a timer, so don’t worry about going in and shutting it off after they fall asleep. Can’t wait to bring you these later this year!
And lastly, but never forgotten, the mattress. Our sister site, US-Mattress.com was invited to preview both the brand new Comforpedic IQ and the Simmons Beautyrest Black launches.
Simmons Introduces the Future of Sleep with Innovative ComforPedic iQ. The iQ mattress adjusts to your sleeping throughout the night, regardless of how you move around and features brand new technology that you can’t find anywhere else. Because of its unique design, ComforPedic iQ is the first and only mattress endorsed by Dr. Andrew Weil, a world-renowned pioneer and leader in the field of integrative medicine.
We were also fortunate enough to preview the Dream in Black event featuring the sponsorship of Dempsey Racing with both Patrick Demsey and his teammate Andrew Davis. The partnership brings performance and modern luxury together. To find out more detail, check out this press release.

Well TV season is running at full force and if you are like us you are already knee deep in your new favorite shows. But have you ever seen a “set” on TV and think to yourself, “my gosh that place is so cool, I wish my place looked that cool”. Well we are here to help you with that. Periodically we are going to blog about some of our favorite shows and movies and pick out some strikingly similar furniture and accessories to help you copy the look.
Our first try is from one of our favorites “Whitney” on NBC, this comedy is set in several apartments in additional to a bar. Our first “Get That TV Look” is going to be the bar set, pictured below.
Styled in “Warm Transitional Contemporary” the bar seems like a cool hang out. Notice the mix of contemporary iconic furnishings with the warm and media textures of the accessories and accent chairs. This look would translate well into any home, loft, apartment or bungalow!
To really achieve this look in your home you need to keep a few things in mind.
- Keep all the furniture at the same eye level – Notice that the seating is all mix and match, but they are all low profile with low backs.
- Use Color to tie in existing pieces- The natural colors and orange hues tie the room together without being too match, tonal differences keep this from being to dramatic.
- Add extra seating areas – in addition to your main seating area it is good to have a quiet corner with a few chairs for private conversations especially if you use your home for entertaining.

Let us know what you think and what other shows/movies you are interested in seeing!
So it’s been a few weeks since we got back from Vegas Market. It was a great show and we’ve been hard at work ever since getting our hands on these looks! We saw so many great products and trends; it’s hard to know where to start.
One key note is that consumers want a piece of furniture they can invest in, due to the change in economy. They desire quality pieces, and even larger scale items to last a long time. Manufacturers are stepping up the quality game, and not just making products to meet a price point. They are also designing them in neutral, classic styling so they don’t go out of style before they get worn out.
And on to the fun! Hot looks we saw a lot of were:
- Grey and Yellow: Hottest new color trend
- White washed wood, bleached wood, and that natural look.
- Reproduction light bulbs, as in Ferrowatt
- Lots of linen fabric seating and linen slipcovered looks. Shows a very casual living atomsphere.
- Fabric textured lamp shades.
- Platform beds with arch bases
- Poufs; they work as ottomans, floor cushions, and are just cute/fun accents to any room
Trends that we’ve seen before but still continue to be strong:
- Turquoise! also now paired with orange.
- Found objects as accesssories, re-purposed, or reclaimed wood products
- geek chic – furniture with mp3 docks, for example: Ashley I-zone
- multi-function, additonal color panel options
- Coastal Cottage styling.. all your Lakeshore, Seaside, and Stay-cation Furniture
- animal print accents
Last Friday I came along a blog post at Freshome about a company called Powerkiss. Powerkiss is a Finnish company that designs wireless charging devices for furniture. According to Powerkisses website, “Powerkiss has developed an integrated wireless charging solution, which converts basic furniture into smart energy platforms. To juice up your gadgets, you only need to place them on the surface of the furniture, just like you would do anyway.” This innovative idea got me thinking on what is in store for furniture in the future. At market, I noticed that some furniture manufacturers are introducing smart furniture technology, like this Liberty office set that features built in power source and USB hubs. Ashley Furniture has two kids beds ( the I-zone and Mi Style) that come with a built in iPod dock. Berkline Home Theater has the ButtKicker® which enhances your home theater experience.
With all these technology innovations, here is what the Furniture Crate team would like to see in the future:
- A desk which would wirelessly charge your laptop.
- A chair or sofa able to charge mobile devices every time you sit down.
- A conference table that would connect everybody at the meeting on a private network.
- Touch screen table top for either a desk or coffee table.
- Sofas or loveseats that automatically adjust to your comfort preference.
What innovations would like to see in furniture? We would love to know!
